Mom in denial

my dad passed away last year, he had things under control, my mom lets me help up to a point but dementia continues to get worse so I am not able to get her the help she truly needs. I also believe she has been giving money to a friend on a regular basis, she is financially sound but cannot afford to hand over hundreds of dollars on a regular basis. She also continues to get more agitated and confused. We have been advised that we basically have to wait until something even more unsafe happens. Are there any suggestions?
