Types of Dementia

• AD or ALZ = Alzheimer's disease
• ADRD = Alzheimer's disease and related dementias
• EO or EOAD = Early onset Alzheimer's disease (diagnosis before the age of 65)
• FTD = Frontotemporal dementia
• FTLD = Frontotemporal lobar degeneration
• LBD or LB = Lewy Body disease or dementia
• MD = Mixed dementia
• VD = Vascular disease or dementia
• TBI = Traumatic brain injury
• CTE = Chronic traumatic encephalopathy
• NPH = Normal pressure hydrocephalus
• MCI = Mild Cognitive Impairment
• YOAD = Younger onset Alzheimer’s disease (another way to say diagnosis before age 65)

Stages of Dementia

• ES = Early stage of Alzheimer's disease (in the beginning of the disease progression)
• LS = Late Stage of Alzheimer's
• MS = Middle Stage of Alzheimer's

Care Places

• AL or ALF = Assisted living facility
• ADC = Adult day care
• CCC / CCRC / LPC = Continuing care community, continuing care retirement community, or life plan community (a facility which offers independent living, assisted living and nursing home residences)
• LTC / LTSC = Long-term care / skilled care
• MC = Memory care
• NH = Nursing home
• RCF = Residential care facility (group home, personal care home, adult family home)
• SNF = Skilled nursing facility/nursing home

Medical

• CNA = Certified nursing assistant
• Delusion = false ideas that are firmly believed in spite of contradictory proof
• DNR = Do not resuscitate
• DON = Director of nursing
• DVT = Deep vein thrombosis
• DX = Diagnosis
• ER = Emergency room
• G-Tube = Gastrostomy tube
• Hallucination = false perceptions of objects or events involving the senses; seeing, hearing or tasting things that are not there
• LPN = Licensed practical nurse
• LVN = Licensed vocational nurse
• MMSE = Mini mental state exam
• OT = Occupational therapy
• PCP = Primary care physician
• PEG Tube = percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy tube (feeding tube inserted direct into the abdomen)
• PT = Physical therapy
• RN = Registered nurse
• SLT – Speech/language therapy
• TIA = Transient ischemic attack (mini-stroke)
• UTI = Urinary tract infection
