End stage - mom
Hi. My mom has been non verbal for the last year or so. She is end stage. Puréed food, bed/chair bound, help with everything. The past few visits she’s been trying to say something. It’s just weird. Anyone have this happen? I am not sure what to do, if anything. TIA

It is not at all unusual for a PWD to have trouble communicating, regardless of what stage. If you see that there is really no other issue, I would just 'agree' with her, maybe tell her you're on it, and that you are watching out for her.

My dad can only mutter some words. Mostly incoherent but once awhile he says something with clarity and meaningful. He is heavily medicated with pain meds and I think that affects his speech. However, we still try to bring up conversation even though we don't know what he is trying to say. So sad 😢

This is so heart wrenching to read because my mom is still able to speak, but starting to not make sense with her words. She seldom finishes a full sentence. I’m enraged, scared, and enormously sad. I hate it all. I know she will lose her speech eventually.
All of that said, she is not unhappy. This is the crazy part. I think it’s partly because I - and her MC staff - still treat her like a person. It’s hard to do. But doable. And the irony is we were mostly estranged before I became responsible for her after my dad’s death.
Let her know you are there and listening. I am so sorry you are having to witness this - all of you. It’s really gut wrenching: we just gotta stay present. Sending supportive vibes to all of you.
