I read yesterday that Memory Care is $115,000 a year. How can anyone afford that??!! and what are the alternatives?

welcome. Cost varies by location. I would find a Certified Elder Care Attorney who can best explain options for your specific situation. There are trusts and Medicaid options that the attorney could explain to you. There are Veteran benefits if the person qualifies. Come here often to ask questions and for support.

It's about $85,000 p.a. in SW Missouri, but I'm sure it's more elsewhere. Some people have that much money, most don't. If you are one of those who don't, because you didn't buy long term care insurance and aren't a millionaire, there is Medicaid. Or you could try a Gofundme page.

I was caregiver for my mom with dementia. She never went to Memory Care. She went from Assisted Living to a SNF (nursing home). In my state, Medicaid does not cover AL or MC but it does cover SNF for qualified ($$) individuals. The differences among states is one good reason to speak with a CELA who can guide you. For her, (she passed 7 years ago), AL was about $5000/month and SNF around $8000/month.

That amount is certainly at the top end and 5K per month would be a bargain. The alternatives is continuing placement in the home with outside care coming in.

You can not count much on Medicaid. Some states fund little of the cost and Medicare funds none.

Note: good facilities are very hard to find!!!

Hi Cocoandcoop and welcome to the forum. I placed my DH in MC a little over a year ago and he is now on Medicaid. We live in NW Missouri and the cost for his care is $212 a day which comes to over $6,000 a month or $72,000 a year. I paid for his care for eight months until he could qualify for Medicaid. I contacted a certified eldercare attorney who guided me through the entire process. Her expertise was invaluable. Each states Medicaid rules are different so it's hard to say what your state might require. To find a CELA, go to nelf.org.

I too stand with Ann but we do need to remember that health care is never free. Countries like Sweden (I think) taxes are very high.

Taxes are high, but that’s instead of paying for your own insurance or having it tied to employment.
