My new tattoo

I’ve begun the process of touring memory care facilities and the costs are sometimes just ridiculous. Today I visited a nice place, not grand but nice. The price for a private room in MC was $12,245 with an additional fee of $600 per month for incontinence. So I’ve decided I should tattoo that total on my wrist so I can look at it everytime I think I can’t deal with DH at home another day.

I'm in Texas (central) too and starting to look at facilities as well. We should compare notes! I particularly "like" the facilities that say they are all-inclusive but then add on incontinence fees , administrative fees, community fees and the like. I thought I knew what all-inclusive meant, but apparently not.

I’m in NJ. The price is the same - without the added fee.

I'm with you. I have visited many assisted living facilities the past two years and one that was very nice near a small town with great staff was over $8000.00 a month. One that was kind of shabby where most of the residents seemed very unhappy and staff was sour, was over $6000. Our physician suggested we sign up DW and use up all our assets to pay for it and then go on state aid. Are you kidding me? I guess we just live in misery until one of us keels over.

I am in Washington and my wifes MC just went up to $6,800 per month plus in her case $3,000 per month for her care level and there are a couple of steps higher for care and each one of them is an additional $1,000 per month. I think there are some things I can do to protect some of our assets, so I have an appointment to talk to a professional in a couple of weeks. I don't have a pension, but I do have some income from the sale of a business but not enough to cover this long term if needed.

To be clear, this was a private room and not every place I visited was this high but they are all pretty expensive. I went into this thinking he would want a private room because that’s what I would want for myself. However, one of the places I visited said that, as a dementia patient progresses they actually prefer company because they have more anxiety. I’m not sure about that. I will do a separate post to see what others who have been down that road think. A companion room would still be expensive but a lot less.

Memory care is expensive!!
My sister was in memory care in California and it was close to $11,000 per month, everything included. She shared a room with one other person.

Marchbanks, I live in Texas also and prices are indeed very high. I did laugh out loud at your idea of a tattoo :)

I'd wait on the tattoo— the price will be going up in January.

I’m in Texas, too, not in the big cities, our starting prices seem to be $6,000 plus all daily supplies, toilet paper, soap, and it’s a bare room with no furniture at all.

In CA it's about the same for a private room. The good MCFs will be costly. Each time DH complains about how expensive it is, I'd ask if he wanted a roommate to which his reply was always an emphatic NO. So there you have it! The facility will not allow him to have a roommate anyhow given his violent past. I can't help but feel the pinch each month when I have to withdraw from our retirement fund.

Here in southwest VA I'm paying close to $9000. It's been a year and they raised the rate by $800 a month. Not sure what to do, other than downsizing myself and hoping it doesn't last too long. And yes, saw an elder law attorney earlier in the journey, but with the 5 year "look back" for Medicaid in our state we were just on the borderline of whether the cost to protect our assets was worth it, given our smaller estate. My only hope is that he passes before I'm the one who qualifies for Medicaid on my own…
