My mom is in the process of being diagnosed. Her doctor told her it sounded like Alzheimer’s not just normal aging.
I finally convinced her to go to her primary care doctor about 3 years ago but she refused to go to the neurologist. I’m assuming after her liver transplant my step dad who is now deceased had brought her to the doctor and she knew what it meant and wouldn’t go back. I had tried many times over the years but was unsuccessful.
The only reason I was able to get her to a doctor is because she was sick with pneumonia and septic shock. After her release from the hospital it took a long time to get back to a normal health. During this time I took my mom to neurologist.
With her cognitive decline her neurologist told her she shouldn’t drive. My sister and I thought this would help to get her keys but were we wrong. When we were on our way home from a doctor appointment she decided she can drive. I ignored her the first time it was brought up in hopes the subject wouldn’t be brought up again. The next time it was brought up I told her the doctor said no. If she thought she needed to drive she could have occupational therapist assess her cognitive function. I told her if the ot approves she could drive but not until assessment and approval. We had argument and my sister came when I asked for help.
Later that night while I was sleeping she woke me up. It was 1:30 am. She insisted I had her keys and I stole them. I had them because I had been driving her around. Anyways she called me a few names and slapped me. I wasn’t going to give her keys to her when she was that delirious. I looked at her and asked what was wrong with her. She asked me if I was DELETED cause she told me to give her keys back. I called my sister and told her. I went to her house. When I got home I gave my mom the keychain without the fob. Her excuse to get her keys was she needed the keys on the ring so that’s what I gave her. Eventually I gave her the fob.
Cause she kept saying I stole her keys.
I stayed awake until she went Back to sleep. The next day she didn’t bring anything up. I’m wondering if she forgot or was embarrassed by her actions. I try as hard as I can to remind myself it’s not my mom’s doing but the disease that is taking over and slowly stealing her away.
I had a hard time accepting the ordeal but now I am coping more. It’s hard because she has a real different personality now.
