Hi Everyone! This is my first post. I live with my mom. She has moderate to severe AD. We will be living in a home with stairs. Any suggestions on keeping her upstairs, while we all sleep? I have read a 42” gate is appropriate. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

Hi and welcome. I am sorry for your reason to be here but pleased you found this place.

I would have a concern about a gate unless it is mounted into studs/wood. Perhaps a company that does babyproofing could do this if your can't DIY.

My friend's mom tended to elope at night She kept mom in a room downstairs (she had a home built with a 2-room suite for mom) and gated the bottom of the staircases. She also installed motion detection mats that sent an alert to her phone and allowed her to get downstairs and redirect mom back to bed. There was a phase of about a year where this was a nightly thing. She and her son, who was home for a year between college and grad school, split the overnights. My friend went to bed early and her night-owl son handed off the phone around 3am.

If her sleep is very fractured, medication would be another option to help her sleep better.
