As I recall your mom is in the end stages of the disease progression, no?

Do you have hospice engaged? A hospice nurse should be able to determine what is going on and how best to relieve your mom's distress.

In the final days of dad's life, he developed a mucus-y sounding gurgle from saliva and unswallowed food hanging in the back of his throat. He'd developed swallowing issues and this noisy breathing/talking was a result of that. This may be an emergency— things can go south quickly.

Dad had a swallow study done immediately and we were given instructions on safe feeding. The SLP said the sound dad was making was what people used to call a death rattle. Turns out, he had aspiration pneumonia and passed the same day.

My mom had quit eating and drinking days before she started making the noise HB mentions. If that is the noise your mom is doing, it won’t be more than a few hours.

If your mom is conscious enough to eat or drink, then she may be having trouble swallowing or may even be getting food/liquid in her lungs. A course for the aspiration pneumonia HB’s dad had.
