Dad has sudden incontinence

My dad who is mid-stage LBD has been wearing Depends since late 2023 although he hasn't really needed them, it is simply easier for both him and his caregivers. He could always verbalize when he needs to go and if he wasn't a fall risk, could toilet independently.

He was started on Doxycycline for a stye recently and after a couple of doses, had increased confusion and became incontinent. We stopped the Doxy and had him tested for UTI which was negative. Continence and mental status improved but now he is having occasional incontinence again.

We are having blood work done and will see the urologist. I feel that this is some sort of medical issue he can't verbalize but it also made me wonder if incontinence can just start suddenly out of nowhere or how that progresses. I know he will most likely be incontinent at some point but don't really know how or when it happens. Any input would be so helpful!

It can happen at any time and come on suddenly. It depends on what part of the brain is affected by the disease. Just to be sure I would talk to his Neurologist.

    • Underlying LBD Symptoms: LBD itself can cause incontinence due to the impact of the disease on the autonomic nervous system which controls involuntary bodily functions like bladder control. Antibiotic treatment for an unrelated infection may simply highlight or exacerbate these existing vulnerabilities.
