This is heartbreaking!! I wondered whether to share this but decided that another discussion about AL vs MC is helpful to those making the decision. “A Tampa Bay area family is demanding answers after an 83-year-old man was found dead in an assisted living facility.William Eugene Ray's family said he was found in a walk-in freezer in the Pasco County facility.” This is a fairly new facility on the outskirts of Tampa. The article said he was in AL and showing signs of dementia. Sadly he probably should have been in their locked memory care wing.
HOWEVER - a walk in freezer in any nursing home, AL or MC facility should be locked at night when the kitchen is closed!

Whenever caregivers have to make decisions for the PWD, I believe we should err on the side of caution. While we don’t want to take away their freedom, their safety is the most important thing. These decisions should start immediately after diagnosis. They must stop driving. They must have 24/7 supervision, their finances must be handled for them. There are so many things that can happen because the PWD can’t reason and the disease is steadily progressing. I’m praying for his family. 😢🙏

What a heartbreaking story. I absolutely agree with you no matter how hard the decision making process is decisions must be made. The pushback we get from our LO must be faced with kindness love compassion and determination. As you said safety first, stop driving, 24/7 supervision, appropriate locks on doors and gates, financial arrangements and on it goes. Thank you for sharing.

How heartbreaking. That poor man. Safety has to be the priority whether at home or in a facility.
