Cold Intolerance

I tend to run hot, all the time. My DH has developed cold intolerance. I have managed to put up with the temperature here… he wears jeans, socks, slippers, a t-shirt, and a fleece jacket around the house and complains of being cold. I wear a tank top and short pants, and I am burning up.

We keep the thermostat on 73 degrees, and he complains often that it is extremely cold in here. I have indoor thermometers all around the house, and they all read 73 or 74 degrees. Guests often comment on how "toasty" it is in our house. I was away for a couple days and DH did not touch the thermostat the entire time. (I have a smart one where I can read the history.) However, now that I'm home, he keeps turning the temperature up. There must be something about me being here that triggers him to turn it up.

I am being very patient about this (to his face), but I am so frustrated. The heat gives me a headache and makes my joints swell. I have a personal fan that helps me stay cool, but it's so miserable using a blow dryer on my hair or doing household chores, let alone trying to sleep at night. It's difficult to reason with him, and if we do come to some sort of agreement about the temperature, he forgets about it later.

Any ideas?

LOL I too was scrolling and saw Cold Intolerance and thought that’s me today, but reading I had given the heading the wrong meaning. I had to chuckle. I feel so bad because today I am particularly intolerant of my DH and I am feeling cold towards him. He has aphasia so if I’m not talking, laughing, singing which I usually do, there seems to be a super cold quiet intolerant feeling around the place. This misunderstanding has almost brought me out of my crappy mood I know it’s not worth it.

Crappy because Thursdays we go to Sailability and this morning I got pushback from my DH. Wouldn’t shower, have breakfast and said a definite NO to Sailability. It’s the only thing I absolutely love, I’m a sailing skipper and I take other disabled people sailing. It’s my 3 hour break. Anyway the day has finished I have a Carer coming next week to care for my DH he can please himself if he wants to come or not next week and I’ll have a cup of tea and start smiling and chatting again. Where would I be without this site. Thankyou.

Yes, Biggles, I can so relate! I almost joked that maybe he was turning up the thermostat because I'm so cold toward him. LOL!

If I am, I don't mean to be. Just like he doesn't mean to say or do things that are hurtful. That said, today I am feeling thankful to have him by my side. ❤️

it’s so good to get such a reply thankyou. Sailability is amazing it gives me such a lift. It’s a world wide organisation but if you google Sailability Townsville Australia it should come up, we have some fabulous short videos that are created each week by our social organiser who is recovering from 3 brain injuries.

For my DH I got him a heating pad for our bed and one for in our living room. Seems to be a good balance for us as I had been having hot flashes for a while.

My DW likes it warm (74, 75) and will still wear a fleece or even a lighter jacket. And our visitors say the same thing yours do. But to put the temp lower would put her into a winter coat. So basically one of us has to cope with the other's preference if compromise isn't possible (it likely isn't). Good luck.

My DH is also/always cold. I put socks on his feet at night, and finally got him to try a pair of my ski glove liners when we went to church this morning. He has rejected gloves as long as I have known him,……but as we left church, he said, "So where are my gloves?" I handed them over and he promptly out them on.

I also keep a small lap blanket available by his chair, and of course the heating pad.

Meanwhile, I'm considering shorts and a tshirt for winter:)

Yes! I recently bought some extra tank tops and shorts to get me through the winter, LOL!

I read somewhere this is part of the disease. Same thing I have with my husband. So ditto to every suggestion. I gave him a fuzzy twin blanket for him at night and I sleep in something very light even when it’s 34 degrees out. 😎
