The Caregiver’s Brain

I’m going through the same stress with caregivers and have almost come to the conclusion that it’s not worth it. I got so angry with the company that sent the last caregiver they have now said they will send someone in January to be interviewed by me to see if they will be suitable. That doesn’t make me feel good either but we will keep on trying and this is for 2 hours of ‘freedom’ a week. I hate this.

Bill, you are a gifted writer. Thank you. While my husband is early stage AD, I have found myself pulling back as you describe. I am content to spend time watching football, chores around the house, cooking. We could have years ahead of us but every minute is now precious.

Thank you for the NPR link! It was a great article, and it sent me down a major bunny trail. On that trail, I came across this visual representation of the stages of being a caretaker. ("Creep or Crisis" means how the transition began… It may have come via a major crisis or it may have crept up on you.)
I'm currently transitioning from the disorientation stage to the sensemaking stage. I appreciate Bill's message describing the reorientation stage… it gives me a window into the future. Thank you Bill_2001 for sharing your insight!

Thank you for this. I think it is very helpful. We all except to do things perfectly right from the start, but it takes time to reframe the way we think. I will definitely be sharing this. All caregivers should see this.
