Affordable Care Options around Minneapolis

My mom needs a nursing home situation a.s.a.p. My stepdad is caring for her but it is too much any longer. They cannot afford the minimum $10K homes that we have looked into. I don't think she'll qualify for Elder Care Waiver and most homes won't even take those until you private pay for a couple of years. HELP!

    Welcome. Have you looked into Medicaid at all. Requirements and what is actually covered varies by state. With your dad still alive and needing to remain in the home things get even more complicated. Even if they don’t qualify now they might once they spend down some. Sometimes a prepaid funeral can be done to spend down. It might be best to talk to an attorney. I have attached a website that help you with some of the basics for you state. If you haven’t discovered already there can be a waiting list at some places.

    There are homes that will take elderly waiver right out of the gate, they may just not be your first choice or the most convenient location. The MN chapter of the Alz Assoc is great, they should be able to tell you which ones in the metro to start with based on the waiver piece. We found the homes in smaller communities were more likely to take the waiver without private pay first. The larger continuing care campuses usually don't. My mother ended up in a small town a half hour from me (we are in greater MN, not the metro.) I would consult an elder law attorney to make sure the spend down process goes correctly for both spouses. The spouse's income generally won't count against her, but you want an attorney to look at their specific circumstances and advise the best route and time to apply. There are strict rules and if they mess up it will delay when the waiver kicks in. You want to make sure you preserve everything you can for dad, and things like pre-paying a funeral is allowed. This website below gives a good overview. Also the Senior Linkage Line in MN is good and can be a good place to start navigating this stuff. 1-800-333-2433

    Hello- when you say "nursing home" does she need medical treatments requiring Skilled Nursing or is it for Memory Care? In California there are licensed group homes that care for dementia - usually single family house - up to 6 residents . They can be about half the cost. Maybe your State has similar.

Commonly Used Abbreviations

DH = Dear Husband
DW= Dear Wife, Darling Wife
LO = Loved One
ES = Early Stage
EO = Early Onset
FTD = Frontotemporal Dementia
VD = Vascular Dementia
MC = Memory Care
AL = Assisted Living
POA = Power of Attorney
