Something Good Happened.
I’ve known my husband has Alzheimer’s for quite a few years, but recently was told he has mixed dementia Alzheimer’s/vascular. Even though he hasn’t smoked in years, the damage was done. He has phone contact with 3 siblings. One brother lives an hour away with his wife. We have not seen them in 12 years and her name was never spoken. At one time we were close. For a reason we never knew she cut us and the rest of my husbands family out of their lives. She was a hardcore alcoholic but has now been sober for a few years. They are the only family living close. So I wrote an email updating the siblings about my husband and his current status. At the end I told my brother in law that he and his wife J were always welcome here. That same afternoon my BIL text asking if they could come visit. I was so happy. Decided not to tell my husband and surprise him. The visit was yesterday, 3 hours. Filled with laughter and memories. My husband was so happy. I’m not sure what he remembers of the visit now, but he sure had a good day and it was worth it. They plan on more visits over the summer.

How awesome that your BIL and his wife visited and that it was such a pleasant experience. Your post gives me hope. My husband’s son (51 years old) has been a great source of happiness for my husband and support for me. He lives a couple of hours away so the visits are monthly.
My husband’s daughter distanced herself from us over 20 years ago. Didn’t visit, call, or even send a card when her father was in a car accident and broke his back in 3 places. We sent her daughter gifts every Christmas and birthday but never got a response. She’s aware of her father’s ALZ but has had no contact with him.

Sometimes all it takes is for somebody to make the first move - good for you for doing so! So happy that you were able to reconnect; so sorry that so many years were wasted. Treasure the good times.

On my very gloomy day, you made my heart soar. Thank you for sharing positivity. Sometimes just hearing good stories helps. I hope the visits continue. Every little ray of sunshine helps our PWD. It must of felt wonderful.

Thank you for sharing such a positive story! We tend to focus so much on the negatives - that’s where we need the most help. But these positive stories give people hope and something to smile about.
