Suggested Meds for Aggression

My DW is 61 years old and just recently has been started to be treated for Dementia/ALZ however the truth is she started showing signs about 6 years ago but it has been very difficult to have her cooperate with seeing a DR and progressively became worse to the point she became both verbally and physically abusive. Throughout the last 5 years I have managed by being patient as much as I could though I did attempt to have her diagnosed 4 years ago but she did not cooperate. About a 8 months ago I finally managed to get her to a primary that came to the conclusion that she has suffered from the ailment for several years with several cognitive tests. Currently she is on 5mg of Namenda/50mg of Seroquel and 50mg of Zoloft. No doubt I would like to have the Namenda increased however she refused to see the neurologist that prescribed the Namenda on the last scheduled appointment, which only would have been her 2nd visit My concern as well is that the combination of the 3 drugs might be increasing her agitation to the point she is uncontrollable through out the day. The Seroquel has been helpful at night time along with 2 Tylenol PMs which eventually allowed me to sleep as well but she turns into an agitated state after being up for an hour or so. I am 65 yrs old, work from home and I am at my wits end.

My question is, does anyone have any comments/suggestions about dosage she is currently on or can suggest a medication that would help lessen her aggression?

ps, I did research Suggested Meds but found some mixed responses and am looking for more possibilities.

Thanks

Welcome; sorry about your DW. For my DH Namenda was not a good fit. I have DPOA and Medical power over my husband so I am able to contact the doctors , make appointments for him and fib why we need to go. Namenda was discontinued and Zoloft increased to 75 and then to 100. Many here have mentioned seroquel with success. Tylenol PM may have adverse affects with those medicines . Be sure you have your legal papers in order so you can just take control of her medical. ( with lots of fibbing and very little discussion).

    Welcome @fprimera

If you have power of attorney and are able to contact doctors offices you might want to see what you can accomplish via phone or a portal. Start with the primary physician and see how that works. The neuro folks in my opinion are better at combining and dosing.

Let us know how you are doing.

I'm sorry to hear about your DW. My DW was initially similar with agitation and aggressive behavior. Her neurologist prescribed Rexulti which is the only FDA approved medication for those symptoms. She was originally on 2mg with still some aggressive behavior. Her dose was increased to 3mg. She no longer has agitation or aggressive behavior. Rexulti can have a sedation effect about four hours after taking it. It's a once a day pill.

My DW’s psychiatrist just recently prescribed Rexulte for her but after I saw the price of the medication, I have held off for now because we are having good results from a 10mgTHC/10mgCBD gummy that I give her each afternoon. The gummies cost about $60 for a month compared to Over $400 for the 30 day supply of Rexulte.

I may be shouted out of this forum. CBD products (edibles) have helped to tame my lion (DH) as the the day wears on. If they don't work for him, I will take it for myself to calm myself and this war zone down. We use a very small piece of the edible. I buy these at a store called blue flowers.

No shout down from me. I appreciate those of you willing to share your experiences with edibles. My husband isn’t “there” yet but it’s something I’m keeping in mind for when the time comes. I used them myself with good results immediately after he was diagnosed. I needed to calm my anxiety and anger without zoning out.
