Need to get grab bars and hand rails installed

DH's mobility is declining. He uses his walker when we leave the house but doesn't use it at home. We have a step from our house going into the garage and also one going out the front door. A handrail and a grab bar would help him navigate these steps. I know they have to be anchored into studs. I'm thinking of calling a handyman but want to be sure I get someone with experience or at least knows how to properly secure them. DH is a veteran. I don't know if the VA offers any help. We are not low income and don't qualify for free or reduced prices. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm faced with the same need for grab bars but fortunately have an excellent handyman that I can call. I'd recommend asking a neighbor or pretty much anyone in your circle of friends who they might recommend. My experience has always been best when contracting with persons recommended by friends on the basis of them having experience with the contractor. "Word of mouth" recommendation has always worked out for me.

Is there a local VFW, DAV, Eagles or similar social group for veterans around? Groups like this will build wheelchair ramps - they might have someone who can help you.

You might check with your local building department to see if a permit is required for this type of installation. They will perform an inspection(s) to make sure the grab bars and handrails are up to code and safe. You can also ask for a list of contractors they work with and compare that list with the names recommended by friends and neighbors - a good double-check.

my mom recently had a grab bar installed in her step down living area by a handyman. None of her friends had used any so I had her contact a real estate office. They often use handymen for all sorts of work inside and outside of homes.

the VA provided a shower chair and hand held shower wand but we had to have the apartment complex install the wand. It might be worth checking with the VA anyway. Also call the Agency on Aging. They may have resources.
