Research focusing on gut health shows promise

TLDR: "New research shows that restoring gut-brain communication can reverse memory problems in aging mice, pointing to new treatments for cognitive decline."
"These changes are registered by immune cells in the gastrointestinal tract, which spark an inflammatory response that hampers the ability of the vagus nerve to signal to the hippocampus – the part of the brain responsible for memory formation and spatial navigation. Stimulating the activity of the vagus nerve in older animals turned old, forgetful mice into whisker-sharp whizzes able to remember novel objects and escape from mazes as nimbly as their younger counterparts."
I like "whisker-sharp" :)

Interesting. It seems like there is a whole new world of research waiting in gut health and our understanding of it is in its infancy, really. Probably lots more to come in that area.

@Victoriaredux thanks for posting this. It led me on a bit of a tangent to see how IBD medications may play a role. I have ulcerative colitis and take a strong anti inflammatory to control inflammation in my gut. While the research is in its infancy it looks like that may be beneficial. So grateful for the different studies into ALZ.
