Seroquel 25 mg
My DH started having started having delusions, some hallucations with hearing noises. He thinks men are hitting on me…family members, repairmen. Wants to go grocery store with me so men won't hit on me. Follows me around constantly. I am wondering if things will go down hill from here.
The doctor precribed Seroquel 25 mg. We are on day 2 and it's a little better, but still showing the jealousy. I am wondering if this the doctor will increase the dosage.

25 mg is a low dose. Talk to the doctor about increasing it. They may do it gradually to see how he does.

Thank you SDaniel. I am worrying with all of this starting.

I was told it can take over a week or more for seroquel to take full effect. Because of this his doctor may want to wait before increasing the dose. It can take time to figure out.

My HWD just started on 25mg of Seroquel 3 days ago. He had a very bad reaction the first night, so I cut the pill in half to 12.5 mg. (couldn't reach his PCP because it was the weekend). He tolerated it and slept through the night with the lessor dosage, but last night was up wandering around most of the night. It hasn't helped his extreme delusions, paranoia and nastiness at all yet, but we have gotten a little more sleep. I am going to ask his PCP if I should go back to the 25mg dosage so that he sleeps through the night. I think it takes a few weeks to a month to have an effect if it is going to.

Seroquel takes a week or more to get to effective level. 2 weeks is usual before any increase.

He takes 25 mg in am and 25 mg at bedtime. We are on Day 4 and this a.m. his accusations got worse, not at me, but other men…repairmen, family, doctors, and tonight my friends husbands. Then at bedtime started in on me again. All craziness.
The nurse said to keep giving him the med and the doctor may increase it in a few more day.
I wonder what the normal dosage is for delusions, paranoia, and hallucinations. It worries me.

DW started at 25mg and it had no impact. She was moved to 50mg daily and things seemed to improve to a tolerable condition. We have been at 50mg daily for about 6 months.
Among the many frustrating things about ALZ is the slowness with which the doctors move with medication. Medications always seem to start at the smallest possible dosage. New medication or increased dosages takes weeks before any conclusion can be made about effectiveness. If you want to change medication it takes weeks to draw down the dosage of the current medication and ramp up the dosage of the new medication.
It feels like the house is on fire and the doctor is handing us Dixie cups of water.

Thanks for your comments Tommyd,
I agree everything is slow.
My DH is taking 50 mg per day. It seems to be slowly helping, but he is still having some delusions and paranoia. The doctor wants us to wait a few more days. I am hoping the meds would help stop the delusions, and paranoia. Maybe that is too much hope.

Justbreathe2, My HWD just started on seroquel 25mg…I am hoping that it will help with his delusions/paranoia too…so far, no change, but it has only been a week.

Bailey’s Mom, if HWD is only getting 25 mg per day he probably needs it increased. I am on day 6 and seeing a little improvement, but still some delusions/paranoia.

My DW was on 25MG Quetiapine for a month or so and we had to increase to 50 MG 2 months ago. The medication helps her sleep for the most part most of the time. I give her the med only with her dinner food mixed in. Lately (last week or so) DW has had sundowning each morning as well as the late afternoon each day. The paranoia and delusions have not gone away. I am going to ask her neurologist if we can give her 50 mg in the morning also to reduce her dementia episodes during the day.

Yardman49,
My DH paranoia/delusions is early in day and late afternoon/evening. The Quetiapine helped a little, but still thinks any man that near me is making moves on me. Turned against some family members. Makes up horrible things about them. Follows me everywhere.
It will only be a week since I started Quetiapine, so the doctor may want me to wait.

Justbreathe2, I think his PCP is trying to start slowly…he has tried two antipsychotics before (Lorazepam and Resperidone) and couldn't tolerate them. She plans to increase the dosage at 30 days if he responds ok. I sure hope it helps with delusions and esp paranoia, which is off the charts. Thks for your advice, since he's only been on it for 6 days, I'll be very interested in how he is doing…keep us posted, plz!

My DH has been on Seroquel for a couple of years for delusions (some related to jealousy and paranoia) and hallucinations. The Dr. started him on a low dose but it didn’t work very well. After a couple of dosage increases over a period of time, it’s been working great for him ever since. He currently takes 250 mgs. per day. That may sound like a lot but the Dr. advised that up to 500 mgs. could be available. We won’t decide or need to go that high, but that’s just a comparison. My DH’s delusions were causing some scary behaviors that were very much out of character for him. The 250 mgs. seems to be right for my DH and he’s been his sweet, calm self ever since. Hopefully your DH’s dr. will find the right dosage that works for him.

While it's extremely difficult to go slowly when dealing with these types of behaviors, I do think it is for the best. Track all behaviors, symptoms, improvements, worsening symptoms, etc. to discuss with the doctor. Increasing the dose is not always the solution. This medication caused delirium, and we had to discontinue it. It, unfortunately, only made things worse. Others have more success with it.

Mommafour, did your DH make accusations about other men? After the meds started working did he forget the things he said or accusations?
