Medications

Has anyone added a second medication like memantine for memory and thought it has promoted a decline in memory and confusion?
I have considered stopping it for my husband but don't know if it's the med or just the quick progression of the disease.

DH’s first neurologist prescribed donepezil and memantine. Changed Dr who said he didn’t think the memantine was all that helpful and left it up to DH (and of course his family) as to whether or not to discontinue that Rx. Much easier for my DH to remember to take the single dose of donepezil first thing in the morning so that’s the route he took. This means I’m not regularly reminding him to take the evening meds which I think makes him feel better about life with greater independence. Pharmacist said donepezil in the AM was fine if DH tolerates it. I haven’t noticed much change in memory over the past couple of months without the memantine.

My DH is on same regimen for 2.5 years as Snipe and Charley 0419's wives with no side effects. Since there is no way of knowing whether they actually help, we will continue for now. Good luck trying to figure out the best drugs for this stage in the journey.

My husband also takes Donezepil and Memantine, both are 10 mg twice daily. Since he has no adverse side effects we’ll continue, plus we’d probably have to stop one or both to see if we notice a difference.

My husband takes them the same way. I don’t know if either of them help him, but he has no side effects.

DW was on both medications early on (now in stage 7). We stop memantine within two years of our journey. Didn't really make any noticeable change. Dr. informed us memantine had a shelf life of about 2yrs.

Professionals seem to feel combining donepezil and memantine make a difference. We put our trust in them, so we administer the meds. But I honestly can't say.

We added memantine to my DH medicines and I did notice a quick decline. But that also coincided with having to stop Leqembi due to ARIA. I’m really not sure if memantine sped things up or if it was just the Leqembi wearing off. Either way, things seem to be moving much faster now.

Like many people here, DW was prescribed both donepezil and memanine. DW also takes two other pills to manage anxiety / agitation. She is at a stage now where swallowing 4 pills each day can be an ordeal. I have decided memantine is the least important of the medication and save that for the 4th pill of the day. Lately she has not gotten through all 4 pills so I need to talk with the pharmacist and her doctor about next steps.

My DH also on Donepezil (1 x day) and Memantine (2 x day), for about 2-3 years now. No side effects. I was told these would help him focus. We will continue until such time as the dr says otherwise.
