Covid Vaccine

My moms health portal said she can sign up for a Covid vaccine between now and next year same time. What choices are caregivers making for their LO’s? I am. It sure what to do for mom.

My parents are getting theirs on Thursday. Vaccines are being done at their  ASL.  They are hopeful that they will lift the restriction after the second shot so that they can cone and go from the ASL as they please.  They had only lived there 4  months when the lockdown started 10 months ago. The ASL had an outbreak in Nov/Dec which they managed to avoid

My mother received one. Her memory care did it right on site. My decision to do so was based on:

The vaccine is low risk even for an older/frail person

    Getting COVID19 is high risk

COVID stresses the body and brain and can set a person with dementia way back if they survive it. Recovery and related logistics are stressful for both the PWD and their family.

Yes my mother is later stage and in her final lap of dementia and life on this earth, but I don't want to lose her to COVID if I can help it. It appears to me that dying from COVID is unpleasant, often very sad and lonely if hospitals are over crowded and people don't get the same end of life care as they would if it wasn't covid, and not something I would intentionally risk. Plus harder for the family to be there and surround the person in their final days, unlike if she passed from other natural causes.

Vaccinating my mom protects others. Once my father is vaccinated he can hopefully spend more time with her which will be good for both of them. It protects the caregivers (in my mom's case, having her vaxxed protects the workers visitors, and other residents at her facility.)

Thank you all. I just wasn’t sure if there were poor side effects in AD

Side effects or lack there of are different for everyone. I have not heard of any serious side effects Just very light flu symptoms for a day for some. I took my 83 year old mother for her first shot today.

I took my 94-year-old mom for her first shot the other day. Her only side effect was a sore arm the next day. Overall she handled it better than my DH. The hard part was getting her dressed and into the car. She's actually looking forward to the second dose so that "this can be all over" and we can take her out to restaurants and to visit friends again.

My 90 yo mom got her first Pfizer shot before xmas and her second in early January at her NH. Zero issues.

I had had concerns since it’s a new vax, but ultimately wanted her protected since staff are consistently testing positive (don’t get me started on the staff compliance issue, I’ll be here all week)

I would be there with you all week too.  Had been only two workers with covid in aunts facility til week or so so after Thanksgiving.  Then within a few days 88 residents and approximately 24 staff positive.  We all know who did and did not have Thanksgiving gathering.  The residents have not  been allowed to go to dining room for ten months.  Appears some of  staff were irresponsible.  Wonder how many workers are refusing the vaccine too?  My 90 year old aunt in nursing home was covid positive 12/10.  Received her second vaccine Saturday.  Had basically no covid symptoms (rechecked her to be sure she truly was positive and she was) as she was the only one on her side not sick.  Don’t think she may realize that some died.  She has had no issue with either vaccine except soreness.  The problem is she thinks since that her facility is now covid free, and she has had both shots so the whole world is safe lol.  She is wanting to start getting her hair done etc.  she is not happy with me when I remind her that a lot of us, like the lady who takes her places and her beautician are probably not vaccinated yet and who knows when they will be.  Probably months yet.  Tell her nothing changes a lot, til more people get vaccinated, other than hopefully you personally are a little safer, and hopefully you cannot transmit it to others ( being studied and hopefully we will know soon).
