Montelukast (Singulair) for advanced dementia?

Hi all,

I’m well aware of the Montelukast trials currently in process.  And I’ve had a few conversations with Larrytherunner regarding the drug, - but what I want to know, - is if anyone has used montelukast on their advanced PWD loved one?

I’m wondering if those who benefit cognitively from this drug are those that are susceptible to allergies and asthma.

Birdies, what an interesting question. I've been taking singulair for about 25 years for asthma. I'm 69-- I'll get back to you when I hit 90!

Something to think about vis à vis insurance coverage-- this year, for the first time ever, my insurance required an approval from the prescribing dr before they'd cover this piddly-squit little drug for an ON label Rx.

I was not aware of the Montelukast trials for dementia, but my father takes it every day.  He's about stage six, with subcortical vascular dementia from a stroke.  He's been taking donepezil for the last six or so years.  Recently he's been spiraling down pretty steadily, and taking the Montelukast doesn't seem to have changed much of anything, including his stuffy nose.

Zauberflote, thanks for your response.  Maybe the Montelukast will protect you prophylactically!!

RobOT, thanks for your response too.  The trials suggest that this medication may help earlier on in the disease.
