Contact an elder law attorney to protect your family's assets, he/she will guide you though the process, come up with a plan that's best for you.

You need an attorney who practices elder law and estate planning. Each person's circumstances and finances are unique, and the attorney can look at the whole picture and guide you in the best way to pay for care and help with the timing of applying for assistance. The state you live in, the PWD/their spouse's veteran status, and many other things affect this so it's hard to give any blanket advice other than to get professional advice.

In addition to consulting with a CELA, if you place your LO in a MCF that accepts Medicaid or is affiliated with a SNF that does, they can help you with the transition as well.

You need to plan ahead for Medicaid, in case your husband needs care in a facility and money is running low. The elder law attorney will help with this, will look at your financial situation and tell you how much of your joint assets you can save for yourself. This is not a speedy process, you should at least find out where you stand now --- too many people wait for a crisis. There are verifications you will need to assemble, this also takes time. Ideally, you will educate yourself thoroughly on the process and be ready to go when your assets get down to the recommended level. Then, start to research local facilities, read reviews and at some point take a tour. Make sure they accept Medicaid, even if he would go in private pay. Don't wait until a crisis hits, it's too late then to make a good plan for him. Your assets may not be depleted now and he may not require extensive care,  but it will relieve you to know now that you have a way forward, just in case.
