Textbook example?

DW went upstairs to put on pjs.  I went up to check on her. She was trying to put on her pjs over the clothes she had worn all day. 6a?

Interesting question. I consider that my partner is still stage 5 but...

He already put his pyjama trouser over his trousers once or twice, and the top over his polo shirt every day ! He spend lot of time to put a pullover correctly. He is no more able to put on a belt (for more than 1 year). There is always something inside out or front from behind. It can be the trousers but not often.

    6a also ?

And I wonder for 6b also. He won’t brush teeth if I don’t remind it. Often will forget the shower and will never wash his hair if I’m not with him. He has broken the security of the thermostatic valve because he did several turns. I now hide the temperature part under a small fabric bag so that he won’t turn it. To his brother he was unable to shower alone because he was unable to use the valve.

Because stage 6 scares me, perhaps I wasn’t considering that.

He still speaks quite well (just a stutter, very simple sentences and a lack of words) and recognizes everybody. If I ask him to go to the train station (2 km), he will be able to go there. MMSE=12/30

    Hello John

I am not a dementia specialist. I can share what I have experienced with DH. He is currently 57 and has EOAD.

    • Earlier in the journey, before testing or dx, DH would look at button up shirts with puzzlement. When he buttoned them they were generally at least one button out of alignment. He also started wearing his shoes on the wrong feet. (estimated 2016)
    • Later, DH started putting his clothes on inside out and backwards. Putting on a belt or shoes with laces was especially confusing to him. He could not zip a zipper. At this time DH was being tested but we still had no dx. (2018)
    • Then DH started getting tangled up in his clothes. For example, trying to put his head through an arm opening or putting both legs through one of the leg openings in his underwear. At this point he was still VERY resistance to help. (2019)
    • DH was also not aware of which clothes were appropriate for the weather around this time. I realize this is a stage 5 behavior. (2019)
    • I started picking DH's clothes for the day. I've been selecting pullover shirts and elastic or drawstring waist pants. I also put Lock Laces in his shoes that had laces. (2019)
    • Now I dress DH from top to bottom. DH is accepting of my help. DH cannot independently undress. He can raise and lower his pants and underwear when using the restroom. The mechanics are getting more complicated for him. I undress the rest of him, for example shoes, socks, shirt, et cetera, (2020)
I don't know what text book FAST Scale stage 6a is. The above is what we experienced.

When I consider DH's current skills, I estimate he is at FAST Scale stage 6c. Toileting is our current challenge. I am becoming a whiz at cleaning up the water closet.

    Take care,

    -LT
