drivers license expiring

Mom's license is about to expire.  She is in MC and I would switch it to just a state ID, but she still has a leased car in her name (not driving it, but we use it from time to time).  Does anyone happen to know if she has to have an active drivers license just because she has a car (she doesn't have access to it and absolutely is not driving it)?  (Shockingly, the stated DMV terms don't preclude her from renewing - but that's an issue for another time).

There is no need to renew her drivers license just because she owns a car.

I'd check with the leasing company just to be sure, and the insurance too.  If the car's being used you want to be sure that's good.

Call the insurer.  If they inquire with the state for her driving history, they will revoke the insurance if the normal driver does not have a valid DL.  This I know for a fact. Ask them  what you can do to designate a substitute driver.

As others have said, there can be all kinds of rules in a lease, and penalties for violation. It’s different than dealing with a car she or you own. Most leases (all, IIRC) require a driver license.  Check with insurance, at least, and check the lease agreement.

Having been through the nightmare of trying to get a state ID for my mother after her drivers license expired, I would renew the DL on line(most states are allowing this due to covid) just for the ID aspect of it.

There is no reason for her NOT to have a DL.  Keep it in your possession if you think it will cause her to think she can drive or some other complication.
