Word salad and hot flashes

My LO has random episodes of speaking where the words don’t go together and we have no idea what she is trying to communicate.  We have also noticed a lot of the time she will also say that she is hot and take her jacket or top layer off to get cooler.

She comes out of it and doesn’t remain feeling warm/hot.

She hasn’t had any medication changes recently.

In the past we have taken her temp, scheduled CT scans and also tested for UTIs just to make sure nothing medical was going on.

Has anyone else had experience with the hot flashes when their LO goes through an aphasia incident?   Any idea why/how it is associated?

DH has been diagnosed as having primary aggressive aphasia with mixed dementia. The aphasia is what you referred to as word salad.  He has had it for a couple of years but he never seemed to be too warm.  He mostly gets cold easily because he always looks for a blanket or jacket. I think medications can have several side effects that could cause a person to feel too warm like some blood pressure meds and I am sure many others.  I guess as long as your LO does not have a fever and just feeling extra warm at times this could be mentioned to the doctor if your LO is very uncomfortable.

Thanks KatieKat1 Yeah, I guess I will just keep an eye on it and make sure the hot flashes at least are not too uncomfortable.  I'll also plan on mentioning  it at the next primary visit.   Always a new thing to get to monitor, at least it isn't boring :-o

My mother does this daily. Usually worse in the evening. She is freezing to death, then burning up! Sometimes it is worse and goes on all day. For the hot flashes I turn on a fan and put a cool cloth on her head. I believe this is very closely related to anxiety, because, if I can keep her calm (using xanax) the hot flashes are less significant. I believe the area in her brain that regulates her internal temperature is affected by the dementia. She also has an overactive bladder and thinks she has to pee every 15 minutes! This brain disease is exhausting. My advice is to try cool cloths and a personal fan for the hot flashes.
