Everything Is Green

Lately we have noticed that when ever our LO describes anything with color, it's always green.  Anyone else have this happen?

We are obsessed with white. Whenever I drive my mom in the car she always says, "look at all the white!" Everytime, without fail. I finally figured out she is referring to white cars when she started counting them one day.

My mother doesn't have a single color to describe everything, but I have noticed her eyes seem extra sensitive to yellow.  She will describe something grey as green and something blue as cyan, pink as salmon, etc..  She is an artist, and I learned super fast to agree on whatever color she sees to avoid her explaining to me that her color sight was superior to mine.....

The changes in eyesight are really interesting.  Another thing I notice is that whatever she thinks she sees at first glance, she is convinced it is there.  No amount of explanation will persuade her she has mis-identified something.   For instance, in a quick glance, a shadow of a bush might look like a spaceship, but a rational mind will say "look again, that's not a spaceship!".  She will assume there's a spaceship in the yard.

My mom found out in her late 70's that she'd had a couple of versions of color blindness all her life! She'd always had a different opinion on blues and greens from we daughters, but it was only ever amusing-- a running joke even-- no idea there was a condition.

With dementia, I'm not actually sure what changed or did not, but she particularly liked one flowered dress I wore-- she was 91 at the time--, simply commenting on how much she liked the pattern. I wore it for her frequently after that, but her enjoyment of it faded, which made me wistful.

But we had a fascinating drive through a park one spring day, looking for azaleas in bloom  (fail!) and just enjoying the short circuit round (and round and round) the interior of the woods (win!!). Certain tree trunks appeared to her as purple. I didn't argue with purple, saying that as usual, she must be seeing colors differently than me because I saw brown. It was meant to get a laugh, and did, but she saw a great deal of purple on that drive, to the point where I wondered if I was only seeing brown because "tree trunks are brown" from preschool onwards! We'll never know. But I sense she's giggling at me right now-- there is family humor in heaven!

Zauberflote, there are some trees with some purple in their trunks. Check out the Rainbow eucalyptus!

For my dad, most animals are birds. He knows that the alligators aren't birds, but he can't remember the name for them so he just says "let's go see the birds!" and laughs. Squirrels are also birds. Fortunately they have a lot of birds at their feeder, so he's right more than half the time.
