Facing the Inevitable

I am a 24/7 caregiver for my wife, 42 yrs married and she is beginning the advanced stage of Alzheimer.  I am scared of the inevitable future and I don't know if I can handle that. I feel desperate, alone and scared

    You are not alone.

There is a whole community here that can help you. Just posting here and talking to others going thru the same thing is a tremendous help.

Also, check for support groups in your area. Face time in a group where you can talk, hug (eventually, after Covid) and just air out your feelings, frustrations, fear, everything will help as well.

Lastly, look into getting a Caregiver to help out, to give you some "me" time during the week where you can try and recharge..

Everyone feels some of what you are describing when a LO moves to later stages of the disease.  If you have not read Being Mortal, it is a good book about the end of life.
If you are not receiving help with your wife, please look into doing that. Make sure you are getting some time for yourself.
Considering having her assessed for hospice may be a good idea + that would also offer you some help + relief.

Frankly I could never accept separating myself from my wife after 42 yrs of marriage.  I even feel guilty leaving her alone in the house for an hour. I am American but living in Chile, no support here.  Thanks for your concern and advice.

Corporación Alzheimer Chile was founded in 1990 and is based in Santiago.  It is a member of Alzheimer's Disease International.  I found them by searching for Chile+Alzheimer's Society.  You might contact them for local resources.  Of course, continue to read and post here.
