The health effects of Covid-19 not only can stretch for months but appear to increase the risk of death and chronic medical conditions, even in people who were never sick enough to be hospitalized, a large new study finds.

In the study, published Thursday in the journal Nature, researchers looked at medical records of more than 73,000 people across the United States whose coronavirus infections did not require hospitalization. Between one and six months after becoming infected, those patients had a significantly greater risk of death — 60 percent higher — than people who had not been infected with the virus.

Crushed note

The VA can do this work due to its pioneering nationwide integrated electronic medical record

No one else in the world has such a system

I did see this on the news. Unfortunately I do not think the information will change the minds of those who are NOT going to be vaccinated.

The people who refuse to get the vaccine should have to read this information.

Some long term Covid  people are suffering from fibrotic lung disease is my understanding.  Fibrotic lung disease is way more debilitating than obstructive  lung disease that smoking causes.  Would also definitely make them more of a challenge to ventilate.  Know a 53 year old who is suffering from this.  Has not been able to work for over six months.  Was a chain smoker prior.  So probably has obstructive and restrictive going on.  Unfortunately anyone with fibrotic lung disease will probably have a shortened life span.  That was true way before covid.  Always felt so sorry for them.

Agree it will not change peoples minds for the most part.  Wish it was different.

The VA's expertise in dealing lung disease is extraordinary.   Since Agent Orange they have extensively tracked all forms of lung disease. The integrated medical record allows clinicians and researchers to directly view the images of progression of lung problems over a life time no matter what VA hospital treated the patient.  The system's  telemedicine capability allows  small clinics full access to images and specialists.

The system allows you to compare covid sufferers with controls who have exactly the same medical conditions but no covid.  that is what the article describes.  The covid sufferers did much worse than the controls

We leveraged the breadth and depth of the US Department of Veterans Affairs national health care databases — the largest nationally integrated healthcare delivery sys-tem in the US — to undertake a comprehensive high-dimensional comparative approach (relative to control groups) to identify the 6-months health outcomes and clinical manifestations in COVID-19 patients who survived the first 30 days of COVID-19 illness
