Mom just fell ... is this associated with her Seroquel?

Dad and I both thought my mom was asleep. There were no sounds, no talking, the motion sensor was quiet, and all of a sudden we hear a huge thump! Mom got out of her bed. The bed has rails! How in the world?? She’s fine. Hospice checked her out and everything is ok. We had to put her in her Geri chair with the tray on cause she keeps wanting to get up and walk around but she’s just simply too “high” right now. She’s talking with her eyes closed and everything’s slurred. Anyways, she takes Trazodone, Seroquel and Ativan. She just started the Seroquel maybe 2 weeks ago. What I’m trying to get at is if Seroquel causes sleepwalking? This is the first time this has ever happened. I’ve been doing a little reading but I’m not getting definitive answers.

Hi CareBear81- We have never had a fall, sleepwalking, or "high" of any kind, with up to 100mg a day of Seroquel (25 mg at a time). What is the dose?

WebMD does not list the things you described in their potential side effects for this med. And they only list a possible drug interaction with Ativan that could sedate her more, not hype her up as you're describing. https://www.webmd.com/interaction-checker/default.htm?result=4718-Seroquel%20oral,6685-Ativan

I'm glad your LO wasn't hurt from that fall. It must have shocked and terrified you to hear that sound! Maybe she was getting over the rail without being fully awake and lost her balance or got a little tangled up on nightclothes or covers? Others will come along and may have better info for you.

Maybe the addition of a third medication combined with 2 that are already associated with and altered mental state and dizziness triggered the behavior. Is she seeing a geriatric psychiatrist for medication management? I would talk to the prescribing physician.

IME, Seroquel tends to help people sleep better and sounder and is often added for that reason. I've not heard of anyone experiencing sleepwalking with it but most of the people I know who take it have bipolar or autism.

There's also the possibility that whatever disease progression that caused the "behaviors" you are attempting to address with Seroquel is what is causing some of what you are seeing.

    CareBear 81,

My husband has been taking Seroquel as a sedative since 2016.  The prescription label states  "May cause drowsiness.  May cause dizziness".  Not sure what causes sleepwalking.

I’m getting so depressed with life right now. I work from
8-2 and have a caregiver for my husband who has advanced
Alzheimer’s. Once I get home he consumes every minute
of my time. He has glaucoma and has almost lost all of his
sight. I work for hospice and have admitted him for help
with medications. He is on Zoloft and klonopin and a blood
pressure medication. I refuse to place him outside of the home
because I’m in the nursing homes, ALF and locked down facilities.
I know how patients are neglected no fault of theirs just short staffed.
I have no help other than the caregiver that is with my DH while I work. My
husband doesn’t know me most of the time and all he talks about is his time in
Korea. I’m so tired and yet want to keep him home. I’m not trying to sound
selfish I just don’t have a life and see no end in sight. Thank you for reading
    just needed to vent.
