Memory Care - Price negotiations

Hi everyone,

We have decided we are getting my mom out of her current place ASAP.  I sincerely appreciate all the advice I've gotten on my previous post.  Thank you!

I am in the process of finding her new place.  I was just wondering if anyone ever negotiates the cost of assisted living?  If so how does that work?   We don't want her money to run out and have to move her again... but know that may happen.

Any advice on closing the deal?

Thank you,

Ingrid

Just 2 months ago we brought my Mom 88 and her boyfriend 97 home from their 3rd assisted living facility. We have never had any luck with negotiating the cost. At 10k/month for both of them, the money was quickly going down. My theory was to bring them home and save some $$ for when they would definitely need more help than we could give them someday. These 2 months have felt like 2 years and that day may come faster than expected. Unfortunately the good facilities don't need to negotiate because they have a 6-month wait list and can afford to hold out for the price. Good luck with your future plans!

This happens rarely and is usually related to a facility being new and wanting beds to fill up quickly. Most often it is in the form of a discount for a couple of months. Otherwise, good facilities do not negotiate prices.

If you are worried about money running out see if it is possible for your LO to qualify eventually for some medicaid assistance, and if so, choose a facility that will accept that assistance.

I was given a couple of months free which added up to $1000 per month. I was moving mother from one to another and they attempted to match my other price. I guess they had spaces to fill?
