My husband has been on Aricept for 5 years. His memory has all but gone so I was wondering if it was helping anymore. Well I forgot to put it in his pills for 5 days and he became very confused by day 5. I assumed he was starting a downhill slide until I realized he had not gotten his aricept. He has now had two doses and is not confused at all. He still has no memory but it definitely eliminates his confusion so he will keep taking it.

    Very interesting accidental experiment there.

I similarly felt Aricept/Memantine combo wasn’t doing anything for my DW, and talked to her neurologist about discontinuing it.  She recommended staying with it, as in her clinical experience (I know this is anecdotal and not scientific) some patients experience further clinical decline when they drop these medicines.

So we’re sticking with it, too.
