Mother In Law wants to go home

Good afternoon:

My mother in law has been living with us for a year now.  We moved her here from her home in South Carolina about 7 weeks after my father in law passed away.  She has a house to sell in South Carolina and insists on going back.  My husband and his 2 brothers are against it as she has early to midrange Alzheimer’s.  Also she does not drive due to macular degeneration.  I have been primary caregiver assuring she gets her daily medications (which before she couldn’t remember if she had taken or not) amongst all other day to day routines.

How do we address the constant statement of wanting to go home to sell her house knowing full well she will not return to our home here?

Hi Tabislvr, who has power of attorney for her?  anyone?  That is the first question I have.  If one of her children has power of attorney, they can sell the house for her.  If not, you may have a lot more difficulty and may need to consult a certified elder law attorney (CELA).

There are lots of threads about PWD wanting to "go home."  Many times it seems to take creative distraction to deal with this--COVID was a good excuse for a while and maybe still could be.  Needing repairs, air conditioner is broken, can't be there while it's being painted, all those kinds of things.

Good luck, I hope you have the legal issues sorted out already.
