Recall Notice: Phillips' Sleep Products

This isn't strictly dementia-related, but members have mentioned using C-pap devices in various threads.

Phillips Healthcare has recently recalled a number of the C-Pap and Bi-Pap machines (not just Dreamstations) because of a risk from the noise insulation material. This recall doesn't seem to have been covered broadly in the media- I've not seen it mentioned in the NYT, on news radio or TV.

Barbara and I both used the Dreamstations. Of course, she has passed on now, but mine has been registered with Respironics under the recall and I am just waiting for whatever the next step is.

I must say, it's problematic, to say the least, to tell us to stop using the affected machines, but not present some kind of timeline that shows us what our options are.

Even the health care providers are not really in the loop about this recall - so far, anyway.

It's kind of like saying there is a recall on my refrigerator, and all they would say is don't use it . What kind of answer is that ?

    chrisp1653-

Gah. I hear you. It seems really weird that this hasn't been covered more broadly in the news. It's almost as if they're alerting only those they're legally required to.

I registered my mom's unit with the recall and called her pulmonologist who clearly seems weary of trying to answer questions with no more information that I have. Based on the kind of sleep apnea she has (mixed OSA and CentralSA) and the severity, he feels she needs to continue to use it until we know more. She's supposed to see him early next month; I hope we get some clarity then.

When my refrigerator was recalled, I used a cooler and ice to keep food cold. The company replaced the part and cut me a check to cover spoiled food and inconvenience.
