Crushing seroquel?

My DW is having problem swallowing her seroquel. Its an issue of understanding swallowing the pill whole. She tends to swish it around in her mouth until it tastes bad and then spits it out. Google says not to crush the pill. She takes a low dose 25 mg 3 times a day. Has anyone crushed them and put in applesauce or something similar? Thanks, Rick

ask your pharmacist0

Rick, I agree with jfkoc about asking your pharmacist but note there are two variations of seroquil, regular and XR (extended release). From what I have read the XR types should never be crushed but the regular type is OK to crush. If you go down the bottom of the link below under General Information it states what I have read.

DH takes 75 mg. of Seroquel (generic form) each evening. I crush it and put it into applesauce. Hospice knows it. That's the ONLY way he would be able to swallow it.0

Rick there is also a liquid formulation commercially available I think0

Thank you all, the rapid responses are appreciated. Rick0

Rosemont makes liquid generic Seroquel, known as quetiapine.0

Rick - I don't know if swallowing generally is also a problem, but if not...I have sometimes pushed the seroquel into the middle of a blueberry and watched DH eat that spoonful of cereal (with fresh blueberries). Then I add more blueberries, strawberries & bananas after I'm sure he ate the "loaded" berry.0

Butterfly wings! Great idea, my DW loves blueberries and has them every morning on cereal My PCP also mentioned the liquid form. Rick0

My Mom is on 25 mg of seroquel and has started to have difficulty with understanding swallowing pills. She does the same thing, swishes it around in her mouth or tries to chew it then spits it out all while I am trying to direct her to swallow with water. Ugghhh. I asked her neurologist and she said it was fine to crush up so that is what I am doing, crushing it and placing it in a teaspoon or two full of pudding or applesauce. Much less stressful for her and me both!0

Good information here, and thank you Marta for the name of the drug company making a liquid Seroquel.
Important to remember that if a drug is extended release, never, ever crush it or open a capsule to administer a med. That is dangerous.
