NUPLAZID-other problems

Have any of your LO been on Nuplazid? My mom went on that a couple of days ago and she became disoriented had "no idea why she is here" and then she said something about committing sucide.  Ironically, she had been seeing hallucinations with this one medication, she went off and wasn't seeing them anymore. Then went on Nuplazid and started seeing them again.  Also, she has been going to the bathroom a lot.  Could a UTI cause confusion symptoms?

She has Parkinsons.

Absolutely a UTI can cause vast problems and there may not even be a fever, and the behaviors can be bizarre. Urinalysis with culture and sensitivity would be advised. The change in her medication could also be a factor.

Make sure she is staying well hydrated throughout the day as the elderly and PWD folks tend to forget about drinking adequate amounts of water. Keep in mind that drinks with caffeine dehydrates the body and can also lead to UTI's.

Whenever you notice behavior out of the ordinary after a medication change it is a good idea to consult the prescribing doctor.

It is also a good idea to check a reputable source such as drugs.com. It is easier to read than the fine print of the package insert that comes with the medication and can give more information. For Nuplazid, click on the drug name and then click on side effects. It will give you consumer information, keep scrolling and you will get professional information which I find clearer. Hallucinations and UTIs and constipation are listed as side effects in 1-10% of the patients in the drug trials.

An update, we decided to take her off the Nuplazid.  She started experiencing bad delusions, she thought people were there to take her away and that she went with them in the evening. If your LO has delusions, paranoias or anything simular please be careful when accepting this into your their pill routine. It could make things worse!
