DW just got her very first   pressure injury

It was from sitting in a regular chair with an inadequately padded horizontal  wooden beam under her leg.  we need to keep it from becoming a pressure ulcer

Pressure injuries start as red, blue, or purplish patches on the body. They don't blanch, or turn white, when touched and they get worse over time. These patches can quickly develop into blisters and open sores. The sores can then become infected and grow deeper until they reach muscle, bone, or joints.

I have provided new chairs and cushions

My DH came hoe after 4 months in facilities with a MRSA wound on his sacrum that had been treated for months.

I cleaned it daily with normal saline and dressed it. I also started using New Zealand Manuka wound honey daily on the wound---just a very small dab (it is very expensive!)--and after a few weeks it had completely healed and never came back.

He was also covered in yeast on his chest, face, legs, arms, and scalp from the massive amounts of antibiotics and anti- virals he had been given.

I washed the areas daily with tea tree soap and then placed olive oil with a few drops of tea tree oil in the microwave and applied it to every area after his shower. All of the yeast went away--including the scalp and face that the dermatologist declared would never go away after many prescriptions. It has never returned.

Keep in mind that Vitamin C helps the skin to heal.

I am sorry to read about the bed sore that your wife is dealing with at the moment.  My husband had a terrible one and once he was moved into a Veterans’s Facility, I am not sure it was attended to.  He began to die the day he moved into that place.

This is what it looks like.  bottom side of the leg knee at the top

The giveaway was the rectangular shape  and it was no where near where she would have fallen
I have a telemedicine visit with Kaiser later

Arnica gel or cream might help the discoloration. I always have it around for bruising and pain. It contains the same enzyme as pineapple and helps alleviate pain, swelling and bruising.

Crushed, the picture is small and not detailed; so from my screen it looks like a good sized  bruise, but of course may be more than that when seen in actuality.

Kaiser Permanente does indeed have RNs that specialize in Enterostomal Therapy - those are the RNs who manage and work with treating and also preventing decubiti or any type of skin wound or breakdown.  You can ask for one of these professionals to be sent out to the care facility to assess your wife and to prescribe a plan of care.  I would ask for one who is a Certified Enterostomal Therapist.

In many Kaiser settings, these RN specialists work through the Home Health Department, but may be different in your area; if you contact your Kaiser Home Health Department, the nursing supervisor there should be able to give you the contact information you may wish to have.

Sending best wishes for ease and swiftness of healing.

    J.
