Excessive sleeping and difficulty walking

I'm new to this forum.  My mom has vascular dementia, was diagnosed over 10 years ago. lately she sleeps excessively, sleeps on one side all night  and has difficulty walking.  she even sleeps while eating, in shower etc.  it's dangerous and very difficult figuring out what to do,  Does anyone have experience with this?  thanks

Welcome GoGos carer. Have you had her evaluated by Hospice?

@M1, no I have not.  Do I need to get her evaluated by Hospice?

They might be potentially a lot of help to you. Not to put too fine a point on it, but these sound like very late stage symptoms.

You do not need a doctor's order to ask for a hospice evaluation, you can call yourself to request it, and some folks request evaluation from more than one agency. Medicare covers the services and supplies. Can't hurt to ask...

This has started to happen to my dad. From what I understand it means progression into end stage. Talk to her doctor and separately have hospice evaluate. If anything, hospice will be able to provide further support.

    Gogo ,

I am right there on the excessive sleeping road with you. It is what got my husband qualified for hospice. We are up to 21 hours of sleep a day.

I think you would qualify , but every Hospice is a little different so interview a couple. They are just so helpful in so many ways. For me the best thing is to have a nurse coming to the house once a week that I can discus care with
