Another interesting possibility for treatment/cure. The problem for those of us on this forum is, as the doctor in the video states, if the trials are successful and the FDA approves this drug, "doctors may begin prescribing it in four or five years".

First Alzheimer’s Vaccine Human Trial Set to Begin at Boston Hospital

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston is launching the first ever human trial for an Alzheimer’s vaccine, saying the nasal vaccine “could prevent and slow the progression” of the disease. Professor of neurology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Howard Weiner, who is also leading those trials, joins News NOW to explain how the vaccine works against Alzheimer’s disease.

This is a Phase 1 trial involving only 16 participants between the ages of 60 and 85 years old with early, actually symptomatic Alzheimer's.  I do not know how many males vs. females are in that number. They will receive two doses of the nasal vaccine, one week apart.  This Phase is to test the safety and tolerance of the drug and then to determine the correct doseage of the drug.   Study participants will be given varying doses of the nasal drug starting in December.  In this part of the Trial, the study researchers will use blood tests to determine what the correct dose of the drug should be.

Later, when the safety of the drug has been assessed and the doseage has been determined, another Phase of the drug Trial must take place with a much larger number of people over time to determine whether or not the drug is actually effective.

Evidently, the idea behind this drug being tested is that its primary substance, "Protollin," is projected to be able to activate white blood cells that are found in lymph nodes on the sides and back of the neck, triggering them to travel to the brain to begin to cause the clearance of beta amyloid plaques which are seen in Alzheimer's Disease.

Science keeps marching on; eventually, hopefully, an effective drug will be found. And then there are all the other dementias . . . . .
