Constipation(6)

Of course I will be consulting his doctor. But I like to get feedback here as well. My dad has suddenly been very constipated, even with the aid of stool softeners and laxatives (given under the direction of a doctor).

A few months back he was suddenly constipated so we started the stool softeners and laxatives as needed and he was going 4 to 5 times a week. In the last 3 weeks he's only been going 2 to 3 times a week and it's very hard and difficult for him to pass.

How did you handle this with your loved one?

is this just a normal change for his stage and there's nothing that can be done really? he is late stage 6. In the past 2 months he even eats less and sleeps WAY more, like up to 20 hours a day sometimes. There's been quite a few changes in him the past 2 months.

Check his meds for constipation as a side effect.

    Is he on miralax?

Glycerine suppositories can be inserted into the anal canal to stimulate a bowel movement in the case of mild impaction.

In the case of more severe impaction, manual removal or water enema may be needed.

If he’s sleeping more and eating less he’s probably also drinking less. We’ve struggled with this issue too. We had it under control and now we don’t. I feel like my LO will never poop on her own again. You could try adding clear fiber powder to his water or juice. This will bulk up his stool. There is a drug called Amatiza that puts water into the stool. It can be given daily.

It took me about 2 years to get my mother regular -- swinging between constipation and diarrhea.   For my mom, here was the solution:  1/2 dose of Miralax every other day.   If she doesn't go for more than a day and a half, I give her a Swiss Kriss (a senna product; just one tablet) each day until she goes.

I turned a former elderly neighbor on to Country Life Calcium Magnesium with Vitamin D Complex.  She took one at night and that solved her constipation challenge.

And as someone else said:  hydration is critical.   Whatever un-caffeinated beverages you can get him to consume should help.  Caffeine is a diuretic, so consumption should be limited.

Barring something atypical, and which requires a medical solution, I suggest you keep trying different things. Each person is unique. .
