the despair poem i just had to write

I feel like the boxer in the ring

I took this on and did the hard thing

No one helped and no one tried

I did it all and so much I cried

I have no regrets except this one

I gave myself and dementia won

Mom lives on, her body anyway

But the end seems close to any day

My heart is broken and I miss her so

Grief and fear are where joy used to go

Will she/me come back to play

To see the beauty in each day

Do hopes and dreams live there still

In that fog of despair that seeks to kill

I am tired and only the end I see

Perhaps someday my heart will be free

My wife was diagnosed about the same time as your mother. It can be hard to hide the pain, even from ourselves. We can only take consolation in knowing that it won't last forever. Whether or not you believe in an afterlife, one day you will both be free.

Your poem is sooooo beautiful, touches areas in the spirit/soul that mostly remain hidden/guarded. Thank you for sharing
