Nothing major, but kind of a rough day

It started out first thing this morning. I woke up in a not so good mood, then everything I needed her to do, it was "NO!". There were several things all day long that didn't go my way, and I was fed up with her. Then I tried to listen to music, but couldn't get through one song without having to get up. Then I finally listened to this song. I love her.

Frank Sinatra - If You Go Away

Thank you, Dianne. And welcome to the forum. We have a good bunch here willing to help and to "have your back".

I just read your profile. My wife worked as an RN too. But those days are long gone.

“Old blue eyes!” Some great music there.  Our 7 year old granddaughter is an old soul with good taste.  She’s taking voice lessons and planning to sing “Fly Me to the Moon” as her spring concert solo.  Hope tomorrow is a better day.  If not, just crank up the Victrola.

I've always been a big fan of Sinatra, but that's not why I chose his version of "If you go away". I chose it because you can clearly hear every word of the song, and that's what it's all about. She will go away as I know she must.

I'd like to hear your granddaughter sing that. It's not something you'd expect a kid to sing.

Oh Ed...Bless you. I am a puddle when I hear "And I love you so" Perry Como or Elvis

I've loved the song "If You Go Away" since 1972 when I  heard Glen Campbell sing it!  Of course, it's on my iPhone playlist!

Definitely understand the feelings you have with the words to this song.  For myself; I have for many years found this song deeply feeling.  This heart touching song was written by the Belgian, Jaques Brel, in French; titled, "Ne me quitte pas," Rod McKuen wrote the interpreted English version.  I personally, for myself, find it much more feeling sung without the canned "smoothness."  When McKuen sings it, his voice is gravelly and he speaks some of the words; it is much more valid feeling for me despite not having the professional singer sound.   Brel's singing of this is all in French; it is different.

Here is a link to McKuen singing this in about 1955:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfziQHKQpfc

When McKuen was a very elderly man, he sang, "Ne me quitte pas," in concert. Wasn't with as much feeling; but for a look at him as a person in a concert setting with a full orchestra behind him:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1mZ2-lrv6A

The lyrics are heart breaking depending on the context one is personally hearing them in:

    *************************************************************************

If you go away on this summer day
Then you might as well take the sun away
All the birds that flew in a summer sky
When our love was new and our hearts were high
When the day was young and the night was lo-ong
And the moon stood still for the night birds song
If you go away, If you go away, If you go away

But if you stay I'll make you a day
Like no day has been or will be again
We'll sail on the sun, we'll ride on the rain
We'll talk to the trees and worship the wind
Then if you go-o I'll understand
Leave me just enough love to fill up my hand
If you go away, If you go away, If you go away

If you go away as I know you must
There'll be nothin' left in the world to trust
Just an empty room full of empty space
Like the empty look I see on your face
Can I tell you now as you turn to go
I'll be dying slowly till your next hello
If you go away, If you go away, If you go away

But if you stay, I'll make you a night
Like no night has been or will be again
I'll sail on your smile, I'll ride on your touch
I'll talk to your eyes that I-I love so much
But if you go, I won't cry
For the good's gone from goodbye
If you go away, If you go away, If you go away

    Please don't go away . . . .

    **************************************************************************

. . . . always brings tears to my eyes,

    J.

Here’s the wonderful Nina Simone rendition:

    https://youtu.be/9rJ_sgv645o

The literal translation from the French original isn’t “If You Go Away” but “Don’t Leave Me”

Way more poignant for me, watching my DW drift further and further away from my outstretched hand.

Michelle, the version by Elvis is very good, but in my opinion that song belongs to Perry.

Jo, you really get it, don't you? Thanks for the background story on that song.

Maybe I need to adjust my listening choices.  When I need a pick me up, I put on some Bruno Mars or Pink!!!

Yes Ed; I guess I do.  For me, it is not about hearing this particular piece of music; it is about feeling it.  I have always felt this one on a deep visceral level; not of my intellect, but of whatever is there deep within myself.  Deep, deep feeling places not fully explored, but find that they do exist within me.

    Music can be powerful.
