New symptoms / don’t know if it’s normal

Hi everyone.

My grandmother was officially diagnosed with Alzheimer’s/dementia in 2018. Since then we’ve noticed a decline in her memory but figured that was normal. In June of 2021 she woke up one day and started having slurred speech. A few hours later it turned into literal gibberish with only a word that we would understand. She would also get stuck on a word like “ok” for example and keep saying that. We took her to the ER and they gave her a CT scan and ruled out a stroke. All blood tests were normal. This went on for a few days then one day she woke up and started talking normally, though we noticed a severe decline in memory.

Fast forward to yesterday, same thing happened. This time there was almost no gibberish except for maybe a couple words in a sentence. The rest of the sentence would be some words that were understandable but others were slurred speech. Took her to the ER, same thing, everything was normal.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Is it normal in Alzheimer’s patients?

My mother gradually lost the ability to find her words.  One of the last full sentences she said to me was "I can't talk."  So, our visits became less and less verbal.  Except when I held her cold hands in my warmer hands, and she said "I like this."

I guess I'm saying it is normal, for some people at least.  Sorry.

Our brains fire to and fro, there’s no telling what’s going on inside a dementia patients brain.

Kind of like a flickering light, sometimes it comes back on until finally it burns out.  Little areas of the brain might be flickering.

Hard to say for sure and I’m definitely not a doctor nor do a I play one on tv.

I feel your pain.  The back and forths and ups and downs are dubious.  Sorry we’re all here.
