Good Day! Seeking to learn if anyone has worked with a geriatric social worker or geriatric care manager to coordinate care for a loved one. How did you locate one in your area? What type of services do they provide? Looking forward to your responses.

I worked with three GCMs and with each one there was a major problem. Be sure of what you need and of what you are contracting for. Ask about her training. Is she affiliated with the local Alzheimer's Association?

I have not, Spirit, but I have a friend who is a long-distance caregiver for her mom who lives in Chicago and they have had an excellent experience with the geriatric care manager. She has provided information on resources, set-up in-home care to help her dad with caring for her mom, and have been a great source for navigating the dementia world they knew nothing about. Iris advice to do your research is spot on! I'm sure they did theirs and it's worked out well.0

We worked briefly with a geriatric social worker who was part of the memory care clinic to mediate some family care issues back when mom was still in denial about the need to be the adult in the room in her marriage. I was there and it was very helpful.
A friend used one to be her eyes and ears on the ground for her mom who had dementia. Mom's wish was to live out her life in her beloved beach house and the geriatric care manager was the safety net that allowed my friend to continue her career as the CFO of a small company and travel with her husband. I think she found this person, who was semi-retired- through word-of-mouth or her mom's PCP.0 -
