Forgetting everything

She’s just forgetting how to do everything.

Helping her do things turns into manhandling her which irritates because she forgets what she wanted to do. If she’s trying to stand up and we help her she gets distracted and forgets she was trying to stand up. Watching her struggle hurts. She spends her day getting in and out of her bed. Sometimes she can’t figure out how to do that and just rolls around or slides onto the floor: There’s no fixing. There’s very little prevention because physically guiding her backfires. Verbal instructions mean nothing. Well, the phrase “stand up straight” still means something. I think she heard that a lot when she was growing up. She’s losing function in her right hand. We have to pick the most important safety issues like showers, putting her hands on her walker and not letting her walk around with food in her mouth. All that’s left for us is constant acceptance.

RW you have done such yeomans work. Have you thought about hospice evaluation? Sounds like she might qualify.
