So alert and present

Just wanted to share that I had such a good visit with my mom who is in a residential care facility on hospice. She was so alert and present. I brushed her doll's hair and then asked her if she would like to try. I couldn't believe it when she replied, "Oh I don't think I can." It was surprising she could understand her limitation and then express it to me in an intelligible 6 word sentence. Usually I get 1 or 2 words from her that make sense. She also pointed out that our shoes looked alike and held her leg up to compare....both gray, slip on, tennis shoes. She was right. At another point, a new resident approached us and asked who I was and I told him I was her daughter. My mom reached out to shake his hand and sarcastically asked him "You're still here?!" My mom always had such a good sense of humor. I ventured further and broke out my phone and showed her a family picture from 4 years ago. I zoomed in a bit on her and asked her, "Do you know who this is?" She automatically replied, "THAT'S ME!" and then turned to me and asked me, "DON'T YOU KNOW WHO THAT IS?" It put a big smile on my face. As our visit came to a close, I told her I loved her and started walking out of the facility. In a raised voice she said, "Bye.....THINK OF ME!" I replied, "everyday mom, everyday." I had a little bit of a pep in my step that day that I had not felt for a long time.

We are having one of those days with my FIL today too! We thought it was going to be a bad day because it was a rough night, but he is alert and aware and communicating so much we called his other children so he could say hi to them. His answers to their questions were so like him - unlike they typical yes and no or silence.
We hold these moments so dear!
