WASH FEET

John 13:3-7 Amplified Bible
"3...Jesus, knowing that the Father had put everything into His hands, and that He had come from God and was [now] returning to God, 4 got up from supper, took off His [outer] robe, and taking a [servant’s] towel, He tied it around His waist.
"5 Then He poured water into the basin and began washing the disciples’ feet and wiping them with the towel which was tied around His waist. 6 When He came to Simon Peter, he said to Him, 'Lord, are You going to wash my feet?' 7 Jesus replied to him, 'You do not realize now what I am doing, but you will [fully] understand it later.'
***
What do you make of this? What would Jesus' disciples later come to understand about His shocking actions?
Think of how you and I can humbly serve the people God sends our way.
Many caregivers already understand and obey what Jesus teaches us here.

We have been doing a lot of studying about Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday, also known as “Holy Thursday,” is the Thursday of Passion Week, one day before Good Friday (the Friday before Easter). Maundy Thursday is the name given to the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, known as the Last Supper. Two important events are the focus of Maundy Thursday. Interesting note is that Passover is not always on a Thursday.

First, Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples and thereby instituted the Lord’s Supper, also called Communion (Luke 22:19-20). Some Christian churches observe a special Communion service on Maundy Thursday in memory of Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples. Second, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an act of humility and service, thereby setting an example that we should love and serve one another in humility (John 13:3-17).  Word Maundy is derived from the Latin word for “command.” The “Maundy” in “Maundy Thursday” refers to the command Jesus gave to the disciples at the Last Supper, that they should love and serve one another. Should we observe Maundy Thursday? The Bible neither commands nor forbids it.   An interesting google re Easter; chttps://www.britannica.com/topic/Easter-holiday

If I might be so bold as to add the following :

    John 13 : 14 - 17.

14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

I can't think of how many times I have heard these verses read, and then been told that these are not literal. As I grow older, I am drawn more and more to the idea that these, and others, are very much literal. We should be washing one another's feet. We should be raising holy hands unto The Lord. We should be.... etc., etc., etc.

     Just an opinion.

Thanks sis for your insightful work.

Thank you all for compassionate examples of the human condition. Some words/scriptures are literal some are metaphorical it's up to us to draw out the true meaning through prayer/study. All the scriptures in this post are simply saying treat people with loving care, be mindful of your duty to love and serve (how that is performed depends on the situation).

The Bible teaches how to live...

    Happy Easter!
