Near the End of the Journey

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this but here we go. I take care of my grandma who is in the late stages of alz. She was originally in rehab at a home that I was going to put her in but there was a fall actually multiple falls while she was there and one of those falls fractured her femur. It was supposed to be a simple which it was. At the time she left the home she was 83 lbs when she came back she was 72 lbs with an infected pressure sore. The wound care nurse had tried her best to get to heal but it was no dice. So a specialist came to see what he could do to help it. The aggressive course of antibiotics would have been too much for her to handle in her weakened state. The decision between the specialist and I was to make her comfortable. Not too long afterwards I brought her home.

Hospice has been allover here here for the past week since I got her home. I'm thankful for their help with wound care and being able to speak with someone when I have concerns about her care, but it's been difficult to not be able to bring at least a little of her back. Yes, I know it doesn't work that way just me wishing it did. On her good days I have no problems for the most part but usually those good days turn to bad days before it's over. Sleep is not a thing either. Between her doc and hospice they're working out her meds so she and myself might be able to rest. I fear though that her pressure is going to be what ultimately causes her to pass though I try not to dwell on it.

I’m so sorry for your pain and anguish. This is so hard and uncomfortable! I hope your grandma will feel some peace and comfort soon and you too.  Your grandma is blessed to have you in her corner! You’re not alone, we all understand this heartache and the unknowns that come with it.

Please keep us updated on how you and your lovely grandma are doing.

Hey LStaires, just sending you thoughts of strength, peace, and a little shut eye for you and your grandma as life comes to a close. The end of my mom's journey was very similar, and it took a lot out of me, but it gave me a lot of comfort in the oddest moments to be there for her.

I wish you both serenity to balance out the heartbreak.
