Sharing a poem I wrote - for encouragement
Please feel free to share my poem being sure to show me as the poet, thanks.
A Dementia Perspective
I struggle with my words coming out just right
Have difficulty staying asleep at night
Maybe I walk more slowly than you think I should
Or just can’t keep up like I thought I could
My words often get jumbled in my head
Don’t roll off my lips like in my mind I just said
Sometimes I have clarity and know who you are
Sometimes my memory escapes me and I just can’t recall
If you will be patient and loving then you will see
My love shine through in our past hopes and dreams
I don’t recall anyone’s birthday but, I still like cake
Just remind me of the occasion and see a smile on my face
I know how to walk & talk, but my brain gets jumbled
And yes, sometimes in my speaking I might mumble
I forget that I can ask for help, remember I do need you
I’m always grateful you’re here and for everything you do
You might not understand how it feels to slowly lose control
Trying to adjust my life while staying loving and bold
If you see me crying, just show me that you care
Simply tell me a story or say a short prayer
When I laugh, just laugh with me about whatever was funny
And let’s enjoy our days, rainy, glooming and sunny
I love you even though I might not remember to say
But I hope you know my heart, as you carry on each day
Above all please know that I am doing the best that I can
There comes a time when we might all need a hand
I’m not purposely being difficult or contrary
I thank you for going above and being extraordinary!
