Okay to Laugh

Married to DW for 43 years, one grandson "Micha". DW a little confused sometimes as to exactly who I am.  Conversation from this morning.

DW: Well.... you're...Micha's grandfather...

Me:  Yes

DW:  ....it's really a small world isn't it.

She still has a sense of humor! In many ways we are all living in a small world!

Norm, I love her response! A much needed laugh.

We sometimes forget the power of laughter here “in the trenches”. We hired a caregiver a few weeks ago through an agency, 3 days a week for 4 hours. One of the first days she was here, I came downstairs to hear her having a big belly laugh and my husband laughing too. I hadn’t heard him laugh In weeks, other than at an occasional tv show. Now my sister and I make a point of smiling and laughing more often, even though we’re sometimes stressed to the limit and have to fake a reason to laugh. “Fake it til you make it.” He does smile and laugh easily when we do, even though he probably doesn’t always understand the reason. And I think it is helpful for him. We have to remind ourselves to do more of that.

This brings to mind an old song by Nat King Cole, “Smile” It makes me cry to read the lyrics today, because it’s not that easy to smile, but maybe necessary.

Smile though your heart is aching

    Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
    Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you
Light up your face with gladness
    Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
    If you just smile
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
    If you just smile

Charlie Chaplin wrote «Smile,» one of my favorite songs. For another laugh, here’s a little story. I live in upstate New York, where winters are long. Wanting a little color, I bought a few fake hanging plants for my front porch. They are quite real-looking, especially to my DH, whom I caught watering them in sub-freezing weather last month.

I enjoy posting the following conversation so if you've read it before, please forgive me.

This conversation happened some time ago between my wife of 44 years and me. I still laugh over it.

    Her: I can’t find him.

    Me: Can’t find who?

    Her: Your husband

    Me: My husband?

    Her: Yes, your husband.

    Me: I’m not gay

    Her: You’re not?
