thank you for your input. no one mentioned vascular dementia - they went straight to alzheimers. I will look into an appt for UTI. He also has a VP brain shunt and I have an appt to check that. New sleeping medication stopped and has helped incontinence. Sleeping all the time is scary. Do I try to keep him awake?

My wife sleeps as much as she is awake and is cranky on days when I must wake her early, which tells me she truly needs the sleep. I let her sleep when I can, which is usually. I just make her appointments for afternoons.0

You mentioned that stopping his new sleeping med. helped his incontinence (if he was just incontinent while asleep, the med probably made him sleep though urges to use the toilet).
When you say “he’s sleeping all the time,” is it still happening, after you stopped the sleep med?
All that aside, my DH with Alzheimer’s sleeps most of the time, all through the night, and throughout the day. As Stuck said already, I let him sleep. Seemed too much, just to me, but doctors said nothing wrong with it.
His doctors checked for problems, none found, and they told me to let him sleep. Their bodies/minds are changing, and sleep is usually better than being angry/upset, or problem behaviors.

I think if a person is sleeping soundly, they are resting comfortably and are at peace. That’s a good thing.0

My wife was diagnosed with vascular dementia. In my opinion, it's not worth worrying about what label they give it unless it has to do with medications. My wife sleeps 12 hours at night, then sleeps again about an hour or two after getting up in the morning. Then usually naps again in the afternoon. I wouldn't worry about it. It's possible that their brains are going 100 miles an hour all day trying to make sense of what's happening. This can wear them out, and IMHO that could be a cause of more sleep being needed.0
